(2014) The chronic stress experienced by correctional officers exacerbates the negative, non-healing environment prisoners are subjected to as well. The system and culture is dysfunctional and toxic. Correctional officers are at extreme high risk for anxiety, depression, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, obesity and all of the illnesses related to extreme chronic stress – hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Correctional officers have a rate of suicide three times the rate of police officers, who have a very high suicide rate themselves. Based on the powerful results experienced by the participants and the very positive research data, being prepared now for publication, the Oregon DOC has decided to contract with PMI for four (4) more Wellness & Resiliency programs with forty correctional officers. Fleet Maull will conduct the training days with the correctional officers.
