Ratna Peace Initiative

ratna-peace-2009Goal: $8,600 • Funded: $8,350

(2009) Ratna Prison Initiative is expanding its services to develop a curriculum and program teaching mindfulness meditation to veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Ratna Peace Initiative teaches Buddhism and meditation in prisons in 47 states, through correspondence, correspondence study courses and personal visits. RPI donates books, magazines, audio and video, and DVDs to prisoners and prison chapels and has developed a pilot program to teach mindfulness meditation to Veterans with PTSD. This has been partially funded by a sub-award from the federal government. The initial pilot project is almost completed and RPI wants to continue this work with veterans at the Denver Vet Center, and make the project available to additional veterans groups.
